The Garrotxa museums

In La Garrotxa we have six museums. The city of Olot is the capital of this region and we found the most important museums. The other two are in Joanetes and Besalú, smaller towns next to Olot. These amenities show us the economic, natural, historical and artistic characteristics of the region.

Museu de la Garrotxa

An equipment located in the old building, built in the 18th century. It was used as a school, teachers’ residence, charity and art school. Currently, it houses the headquarters of the Catalan landscape observatory, the house of the Olot giants and the Garrotxa museum. The museum has three temporary rooms located on the ground floor and the first floor. The permanent exhibition is on the top floor of the building. The equipment showing us the pictorial landscape movement that was a reference in Catalonia. The museum has paintings by the Vayreda brothers and Josep Berga i Boix, the promoters of this movement. In addition to the evolution of this pictorial style, we find sculptures and paintings by important Catalan artists.

Museu del sants

This exhibition space shows us how to make religious imagery that developed in the city of Olot. The building is located where was the first religious imagery workshop in the city, founded by Joaquim Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix, in 1880. The exhibition has five spaces; the room of models, the room of molding and retouching, the room of painting and decoration, the room of popular culture, festive imagery and nativity scenes and the hall of the saints of Olot.

Espai cràter

The main exhibition is a space where we can dynamically learn about the region’s volcanoes and their formation. We find screens, models, projections… Thesematerials give us the freedom to choose what knowledge we want to learn. In addition, it is a center that promotes research and knowledge of science and society. Through other spaces offer us, conferences, conferences and activities from different scientific fields.

Casa-museu Can Trincheria

An exhibition to see the daily life of a wealthy family from Olot. This house-museum located in the center of Olot was built in the 18th century and shows us pictures, furniture, sculptures that demonstrate the importance and power of the Trincheria family.

Circusland

We are moving to Besalú, a town of great historical interest and which, just over a year ago, also has equipment focused on circus arts. We find it inside the monastery of Sant Pere, a religious building built in 977. After almost nine hundred years with religious uses, an entrepreneur bought it to turn it into a textile factory until 1978, when turned into a boarding house. The large building has made it possible to create a unique facility in Europe dedicated exclusively to the history and present of the circus arts. It aims to form, conserve, research, disseminate and exhibit a permanent collection of cultural assets related to the circus arts.

Can trona, Centre de cultura i natua de la Vall d’en bas

The latest equipment, can be found in the Vall d’en Bas, specifically in Joanetes. An agricultural and livestock area. For this reason, a museum was created to show us the life and evolution of the valley. A multidisciplinary space with a permanent exhibition room that explains the Vall d’en Bas and its natural and animal evolution. It also has a room for temporary exhibitions from different areas and other spaces for activities, talks and conferences.

These are the six most important museums that we have in the region, that explain us the region. A few visits to some of these museums could be a good way to complete the balloon flight activity and see the region from different points of view.
